Road's End

Five years coming -
five years going -
ten years living
together - not really
knowing.

Married young -
one child, then two.
it’s hard living
by the sign that says.
“Road’s End.”

Cold winters
and hard drinking
beat a man down
by a sign that says,
“Not Hiring”

The radio plays
yesterday’s songs
softly as the
broken screen door
says, “He’s gone.”

Sitting in the dark,
watching the road,
the lateness of the night.
etched on her face,
she says, “I tried.”

Vanished taillights
no longer glow on
rain darken asphalt
stretching straight to
a place he said, “understood.”

Five years coming -
five years going -
ten years living
together - not really
knowing.

Beautiful poem with that tinge of sadness too.
The woman seem to have been portrayed as a strong one "I tried" tells it all. Good one!!
